Terms of Use
These are the terms for using Backwire. They are short on purpose. If you use Backwire, you agree to them.
1. Invite-only
Backwire accounts are created by invitation from an existing member. You may invite people you know. Invites are single-use, expire after 14 days, and are limited per member so the network stays small and personal. Do not post invites publicly or sell them.
2. Who may use it
You must be at least 18 years old, or use Backwire with the consent and supervision of a parent or guardian. You are responsible for what happens under your account, so keep your password and recovery key to yourself.
3. Be decent
Treat other members the way you would in person. Do not harass, threaten or impersonate anyone. Do not use Backwire for anything illegal, including sharing material you have no right to share. Encryption protects your privacy; it does not change what the law allows.
4. Our part
We run the server, keep it patched and backed up, and keep your conversations encrypted end to end. We do not read your messages and cannot. We may deactivate accounts that abuse the service, other members, or these terms, and we may suspend the service for maintenance.
5. Your data
What we store and why is explained in the Privacy Policy, which is part of these terms. You keep ownership of what you write and share. You may deactivate your account at any time.
6. No warranty
Backwire is provided as-is, without warranty of any kind. We work hard to keep it running and secure, but we cannot promise it will always be available or error-free, and we are not liable for losses that come from using it, to the extent the law allows. In particular: if you lose your recovery key and your signed-in devices, your encrypted history cannot be recovered by anyone.
7. Changes
If these terms change in a way that matters, we will say so in the app and update the effective date above. Continuing to use Backwire after that means you accept the new terms.
